The scheme has been approved by the Environment Agency (EA) and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), and is set to become operational on 1 January 2027.
Verda said it would become the first new WEEE producer compliance scheme to receive approval since 2015, marking a new entrant to the UK market after more than a decade.
The scheme will provide compliance services to both business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) producers.
Dave Allen, Head of Producer Responsibility at HW Martin Waste, commented: “Securing approval for Verda is a major milestone for us, but becoming the first new WEEE Producer Compliance Scheme to be approved in more than a decade makes it particularly significant.
“We want it to be a responsive, transparent and commercially sensible scheme that understands both the regulatory obligations placed on producers and the realities of collecting and treating WEEE on the ground.”
Verda to prepare for 2027 launch
Following approval, Verda will undertake its final mobilisation programme ahead of the start of the 2027 compliance year.
This will include onboarding producers, preparing its systems, establishing evidence and treatment arrangements, and further developing its network of operational partners.
The scheme is being led by Allen alongside Damien Snape, Scheme Administrator, with Phil Darwin, Director at HW Martin Waste, providing executive oversight as Lead Director.
Darwin added: “Verda is a natural extension of the capability that already exists within HW Martin Waste.
“Our intention is to build Verda carefully and sustainably, establishing long-term relationships with producers, local authorities and treatment partners rather than simply pursuing scale for its own sake.”
HW Martin Waste
Verda has been developed by HW Martin Waste to combine its producer-responsibility capabilities with the operational experience of an established waste and resource management business.
HW Martin Waste already manages WEEE through a network of designated collection facilities (DCFs), giving the business experience of working with local authorities, collection sites, treatment partners and compliance schemes.
The company said Verda would focus on governance, transparent evidence management and oversight of the treatment chain, alongside an understanding of WEEE collection and recycling operations.
Allen said the scheme would prioritise relationships across the WEEE supply chain, including producers, compliance schemes, local authorities, collectors and treatment operators.
He added: “We are looking forward to speaking to producers and industry partners over the coming months and, most importantly, demonstrating what Verda can bring to the market from 2027.”
