Hertfordshire fire crews were called to the Wood Recycling Services site in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Crews from St Albans, Watford, Garston, Hemel Hempstead Redbourn and Wheathampstead attended the scene.
A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue told letsrecycle.com this morning (November 12) that the fire was on-going.
She said: We were called in the early hours between Saturday night and Sunday morning to a major fire at a recycling centre. It looks like it was a very large pile of recycled timber that is on fire.
She added that the incident will be ongoing for some time and that relief crews were being sent.
The site, which is located just off the A414 and M1, handles about 45,000 tonnes of wood a year which is chipped and sent for use in biomass boilers in the UK and in Europe.

As a result of the fire, several roads in the surrounding area have been closed and could remain closed for at least two days.

The roads have been closed for safety reasons. The spokeswoman said: As a result of this we have had to close roads in the surrounding area so there will be some congestion.
She said that because of the size of the fire, the roads could remain closed for a while until the fire is under control and the smoke is dealt.
