Firm to set up first plastics recycling training centre

A manufacturer of plastic recycling machinery has revealed its intention to establish the only recycling training centre of its kind in Europe, at a site in Telford.

Stafford-based Next-tec supplies baling machines, shredders and granulators as well as its own patented range of “PolyCycle” plastics densification equipment for the treatment of expanded plastics like polystyrene.

The company has just bought the Telford-based plastics industry training firm Polymer Training Limited, and says it is now intending to develop a specialist centre to train workers in the use of recycling machinery.

Previously owned by a not-for-profit industry trust, Polymer Industry Education and Training Trust, Polymer Training has a factory as well as conference facilities.

Next-tec said its acquisition of the organisation would safeguard the Telford workforce and allow it to expand into training for the recycling industry alongside the site's traditional role training workers in the plastics sector.

Its managing director, Peter Smith, said: “Buying PTL is really exciting news for us because we have the vision, the business model and the requisite skills to make the company a world leader in recycling training.

“That's why everyone at Next-tec and PTL are so passionate not only about training workers in the polymer industry, but also about training industry to recycle.”

Telford MP David Wright, who has been working with Next-tec to ensure the future of Polymer Training said: “Telford has a proud tradition of working in the polymer sector and I am delighted that Next-tec has bought PTL and that the future of polymer industry training here in Telford is secure.

“Peter Smith and Next-tec have shown they have the vision, the drive and the commitment to make the company a world leader in recycling training and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help the company and its workforce prosper,” said the MP.
