EMR appoints new chair and chief executive

Warrington-based metal recycling firm European Metal RecyclingLtd has announced a restructuring of its board, including the appointment of a new chief executive and chairman.

The board reshuffle will be put into place with immediate effect, following the death of former EMR chairman and chief executive Philip Sheppard, who passed away aged 64 in August 2011. The former director of EMRs US operations Colin Iles has been appointed chairman while Mr Sheppards son, Chris Sheppard, takes over as chief executive.
The restructuring was announced at a meeting of the companys board on Friday (January 6).

Commenting on the move, Mr Iles said: These changes clearly lay a very strong foundation following the passing of Phillip. EMR has been built into a great company with an excellent management team and I believe, with this structure, we are securing our continued growth and success.

In a statement EMR said: Colin has played a key part in the development of the Group into a leading global metal recycling business over the last 25 years. He will bring considerable experience to bear in helping drive EMRs global strategic development.

Chris Sheppard meanwhile takes over as group chief executive, leaving his previous post as executive director of European operations.

Speaking after the board meeting on Friday, Mr Sheppard said: The restructuring of responsibilities provides a clear platform from which the strong performance and heritage of EMR can be continued into the future. The company has a first-rate management team, great employees and an exciting future.

EMR was formed by Phillip Sheppard in Rochdalein 1994, becoming one of the UKs largest metal recycling firms. EMR currently employs over 3,500 staff, operating worldwide in countries including Germany, Switzerland, India, China and Thailand as well as the USA.

The companys core business is the recycling of scrap metal from a range of sources such as End-of-Life vehicles, consumer products, industry, construction and demolition. This results in sales of recycled commodities of around 10 million tonnes a year.
