Two separate fires at waste and recycling facilities have seen fire crews deployed to incidents in Staffordshire and Wiltshire over the past 24 hours.

Firefighters remain at the scene of a large blaze at scrap metal business Moores Metals in Stoke-on-Trent after being called to the site in the early hours of this morning (16 June 2026).

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called in the early hours of the morning to reports of a fire at the facility on Chemical Lane.

Five fire engines, two water carriers and a high-volume pump were sent to the scene, with firefighters also using foam to tackle the blaze.

In a statement, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 3.23am this morning to reports of a fire at Moores Metals on Chemical Lane.

“People nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

“We are asking people to avoid the area if possible.”

The cause of the fire will be determined following an investigation once the incident has concluded.

100 tonnes on fire at Wiltshire recycling plant

The incident follows a separate fire at a recycling site near Calne, Wiltshire, yesterday afternoon (15 June 2026).

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the site at Compton Bassett at 4.58pm, where approximately 100 tonnes of household waste had caught fire.

Around 10 fire engines, including multiple pumping appliances and two water carriers, attended the incident.

Calne Fire Station stated: “We are dealing with a fire at a recycling site in Compton Bassett which is creating a smoke plume.

“Affected local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed until the smoke has cleared.”

Firefighters continued to tackle the blaze into the evening, with the cause of the incident not yet confirmed.
