Officially opened on Monday (24 June) the plant was built by a consortium of Interserve and Babcock & Wilcox Vølund from Denmark and is managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
Worth £160 million, Templeborough Biomass first generated electricity to the national grid at the end of last summer and commissioning was completed earlier this year.

Feedstock for the plant is being sourced by Stobart Energy from commercial and construction sources, with 12,000 tonnes coming from Seneca’s construction and demolition MRF in Wembley, North London (see letsrecycle.com story).
Commenting on the opening, senior partner of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Christina Grumstrup Sørensen, said: “We are very proud to formally inaugurate our plant and to have His Royal Highness The Duke of York visit to make the day extra special. We were delighted to be able to discuss with him the benefits of renewable energy in the fight against climate change”.
This was echoed by the managing director of CI Biomass, Tim Forrest, who added: “It has been a pleasure to celebrate the day with the project partners and reflect on the great work that has brought us to this point. We are now looking forward to many successful years of working with the local community here in Rotherham and generating clean, green energy for homes across South Yorkshire.”
During the construction phase, the project employed around 400 people and 30 jobs have been created to manage, operate and maintain the plant for its lifetime of more than 20 years.
In the first year of construction, the plant’s developers said that over £40m was spent in the local economy on products and services acquired.
