The Knapsack service uses polythene sacks supplied by the company and placed in a fixed or mobile metal frame which is located near to where waste material is produced.

Cromwell carries out a free audit for clients, calculates the likely volumes of packaging material generated and agrees acollection frequency. The company thencollects the materialand sends it toan accredited reprocessor.

Waste transfer notes and compliance certificates are provided and the company pays the value of the waste based on weight and type of material.

Cromwell claims this is a cost-efficient means of recovering plastics and card from the waste stream for small and medium size businesses and those without formal waste management arrangements in place.

SMEs

Garth Imison, managing director of Cromwell Polythene, said: There are many SMEs, who, for a variety of reasons, are wasting money by failing to segregate their waste and comply with the duty of care provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the pre-treatment of waste legislation.

The Knapsack system makes it easy for them to recover potentially valuable plastics and card from the waste stream that we are willing to pay for as part of our closed loop sustainability strategy. Not only does that enable them to meet their environmental obligations, but it immediately converts their waste into a precious raw material that can be used in the manufacture of new polythene bags.
