Biffa claims first past the post in securing enough PRNs for 2001

Biffa's is the first company to claim success in obtaining enough packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) to meet its compliance obligations this year.

In a statement issued today, the waste management company says: “Biffa Waste Services, Biffpack, Impact and Biffpack (Northern Ireland) have fully complied with the requirements of the Packaging Regulations in 2001.”

James Butler, manager of the schemes, said: “In what has has been a difficult trading year for PRNs, with some predicting some obligated parties would be unable to comply and prices up by 100% in
most materials, I can now confirm we have sufficient PRNs or PERNs to meet
our obligations.”

Changes in targets and membership growth led to a substantial increase in the obligation of the Biffa schemes this year, with final tonnage figures (total recovery obligations): Biffpack 347,176, Impact 2,242 and Biffpack (Northern Ireland) 4,101.
