Aluminium foil competition nets 16 tonnes

More than 90,000 children took part in the Big Aluminium Foil Recycling Challenge, sponsored by Baco Consumer Products, this year. The children, from 490 primary schools across the UK, donated all the foil they collected to local community-benefit recycling programmes.

Just over 16 tonnes of alufoil, worth 6,500, were donated to local groups, and more than 100 schools were able to chose educational prizes for their schools by achieving collection targets.

Aluminium foil is now part of mainstream recycling in over 200 local authorities, with the majority of schemes run for local community benefit.

“It's great for children to do something simple, which helps so many people, as well as the environment” says Ros Sheppard of competition organisers Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro). “Recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy used in primary production, so it really is worth while.”

Sports and science equipment were the most popular prize choices for winners, with music, craft and play materials following close behind. The top prize-winning school was Marldon Primary in South Devon.
