AIMCo has joined an Equitix-led investor group to acquire a 50% interest in Viridor, with existing shareholder KKR retaining the remaining stake.

The transaction sees the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) join Equitix and GCM Grosvenor in the acquisition of the interest in the UK Energy from Waste (EfW) operator from KKR.

Viridor operates 12 EfW facilities across the UK, with two further sites under construction.

The investor group said it was attracted to Viridor’s market position, long-term contracted and inflation-linked cash flows, diversified operating footprint and potential for future growth through its development pipeline.

Ben Hawkins, Executive Managing Director and Global Head of Infrastructure, Renewable Resources and Energy Transition at AIMCo, commented: “As AIMCo’s first investment in the energy-from-waste sector, it broadens our infrastructure portfolio and supports our objective of delivering long-term value for the clients we serve.”

The investor group said it was committed to supporting Viridor’s management team as the business continues to grow and develop.

Infrastructure investor Equitix increased its stake in Viridor Group acquiring a substantial minority holding from global investment firm KKR in January 2026.

Under the terms of the agreement, Equitix will further expand its exposure to the UK EfW market through Viridor, with a pathway to grow its ownership to up to 50%.

Equitix Chief Investment Officer Achal Bhuwania added: “We are delighted to welcome AIMCo as part of an Equitix-led investor group alongside GCM Grosvenor, holding a 50% co-control position in Viridor.

“Viridor’s essential infrastructure assets, resilient utility-like characteristics and exposure to long-term themes such as resource recovery and decarbonisation make it an attractive platform for sustainable growth.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with KKR and the management team to support its next phase of growth.”

The transaction took place against the background of KKR’s planned sale of Viridor, which was reported in mid-2025.

US-based private equity firm KKR acquired the business in 2020 for £4.2 billion, following its carve-out from Pennon Group.

Equitix, a mid-market infrastructure investor, manages more than £13.8 billion in assets across 24 countries, with a portfolio spanning social, environmental and economic infrastructure.
