An Enforcement Notice was served last week (17/09/03) after the Agency received six complaints about smells in the area. Initial investigations indicated the smell was probably coming from the site's composting facility.
The Agency said: “The notice requires the company to operate the composting part of the site without causing excessive smells in accordance with the conditions of the Waste Management Licence.”
The news follows the announcement this week that September 2003 has been the driest since 1959 in the UK. Composting plants have been suffering from the particularly dry weather for several months now, and earlier this week, composting experts told letsrecycle.com that until the weather becomes wetter, some sites are likely to continue experiencing dust and odour problems.
A spokesman for WRG said: “Waste Recycling is fully committed to ensuring that its composting operations at Welbeck have the least environmental impact at all times, and will work with the Environment Agency in order to respond to the issues raised in the enforcement notice.”
