Equipment demand prompts creation of joint venture

O.Kay Engineering has joined with its German partner firm Ludden and Mennekes (LM) to form a new company. The joint venture, OKLM Recycling Technology Ltd, has been created to allow the two companies to co-supply large-scale recycling and composting plants to UK customers from under a single roof.

Already the venture is supplying equipment for the new Onyx Environmental materials recycling facility at Alton in Hampshire and OKLM expects to reveal details of another major UK order this autumn.

Although a 50:50 subsidiary of O.Kay and LM, OKLM is backed by LM’s European operation. This includes Sutco Recycling Technik in Germany and Sutco Polska in Poland as well as LM’s plant in north Germany. O.Kay is one of the UK's longest established suppliers of MRF equipment from its own plant in Leicestershire. The site will also now manufacture for OKLM, as well as serve customers both as an English-speaking contact company and a rapid-response technical support team.

O.Kay Engineering managing director Robin Kay said: “OKLM now has a combined workforce of 350 and a massive manufacturing capacity of 500,000 production hours per year. This means it will meet any level of demand made on its resources during the upcoming investment and technological revolution in the UK waste industry, now that European recovery targets have started to take effect.”

O.Kay first sought a partner 12 months ago when realised it needed extra manufacturing and bonding capacity to meet the demands of so many new and expected contracts within the UK waste and recycling sector.

“It is a perfect marriage,” said Robin Kay. “O.Kay is well known in the UK as a good company that is easy to work with, but our size held us back as the contracts grew larger. Now, with LM as our partners, we can continue to deliver world-class systems across the spectrum, no matter how big or small the contract.”
