Waste Watch given 175,739 to scrutinise schools

The environmental damage caused by schools and universities is to come under scrutiny from a 175,739 Waste Watch project.

Waste Watch's environmental consultancy, Wastebusters, has been awarded Landfill Tax Credit money by Biffaward for the study. The project will aim to reduce the sector's environmental impact and improve awareness of waste issues among staff and children.

A spokeswoman for Waste Watch said: “Its aim is to look at the physical resource flows through the education sector and to put together a picture of the quantities of materials procured, used and disposed of.”

Wastebusters is currently recruiting educational bodies to take part in the study which will begin this autumn. It hopes about 70 schools and universities will sign up to the scheme, which will last 12 months.

The data will be analysed to give information such as waste per person, by school size and by location. A sector report will then be written identifying key trends and figures.

There is currently no data on the environmental impact of the education sector as a whole, the spokeswoman said. “This project will aim to fill that gap whilst at the same time providing useful data to individual establishments, practical advice to management and staff and targeted training to participating establishments.”
