WRG acquires Cumbria trade and clinical waste firm

Waste Recycling Group has acquired Cumbria trade waste specialists Alco Waste Management for an undisclosed multi-million pound sum.

The acquired business, which is based at the Lillyhall Industrial Estate in Workington, includes a non-hazardous landfill site, a treatment facility for solid and liquid wastes. It also includes a waste reception and recycling facility, green waste composting and the generation of electricity from landfill gas.

With a staff of 110, Alco Waste has a fleet of 25 trade waste collection vehicles, tankers and bulk articulated vehicles. The acquisition also includes Alco Waste's clinical waste collection business, Alco Healthcare, which operates across the north of England from sites in Carlisle, Widnes and Newcastle.

Presence
WRG, which is itself owner by private equity group Terra Firma, is one of the largest waste management firms in the country, handling more than 15 million tonnes of household, commercial and industrial waste each year.

Commenting on the acquisition, WRG chief executive Jim Meredith said: “This business will build on WRG's existing presence in Cumbria and we look forward to welcoming Alco Waste's 110 employees to the WRG team.”

Business advisory firm DTE Leonard Curtis acted as administrator on the sale of Alco Waste to WRG.
