WRAP director Peter Maddox departs

Peter Maddox is director of WRAP

WRAP director Peter Maddox, who had been number two at the resources charity in terms of the management team, has left the charity. [Updates below, 22 December]

Announcing his departure on Twitter today, Mr Maddox said he had left WRAP after “14+ amazing years”. He added: “It has been an enormous privilege to work alongside some of the most passionate and driven people you could ever wish to meet.”

Reactions to the announcement included one from former CIWM chief executive, Steve Lee, who remarked: “Hey Peter. ….. didn’t see that coming! Good luck for the future.”

Mr Maddox had worked alongside chief executive Marcus Gover and held the responsibility for the UK programme.

[UPDATED 22 December 2020:] A spokesman for WRAP said: “During the 14 years Peter has worked with us, WRAP has achieved charitable status, significantly increased our international reach and diversified our income streams. We are very grateful for the contribution Peter made to our success, and while we’re sad to see him go, we respect his decision to move on now at the start of a new business period and wish him all the very best for the future.”

Review

Mr Gover has commissioned a radical review of the resources charity which is expected to be announced in the New Year. The organisation recently appointed restructuring specialist Charles Darley as managing director. On his Linked In page, Mr Darley explains that he “has delivered major change programs delivering much improved profits and reversing previous revenue declines acting as an employee or Director.”

[22 December UPDATE] WRAP has explained that Mr Darley but is in the post on an interim basis which has meant the creation of an additional director post as he works on a plan for aligning the organisation with what is seen as considerable potential for growth in coming years.

Claire Shrewsbury, WRAP’s Head of Government and Communities, will be stepping into the other director post while permanent postholder positions are filled.

Market development

Mr Maddox joined WRAP in 2006 and became Director in 2016. He worked on the market development of recycled materials, built WRAP’s strategy and planning function, and managed WRAP’s resource efficiency programmes for Defra. He developed WRAP’s new business strategy around a circular economy framework, and in 2015 established the Resource London partnership with the London Waste and Recycling Board. As Director for WRAP UK, he is responsible for WRAP’s work on food, textiles, plastics and recycling in the UK.

Before WRAP, Peter spent nearly 20 years working for BP in the petrochemicals sector in UK and France. He was lead chemist in a commercialisation of a new plastics technology in Marseilles for 3 years, then returned to London to establish and manage BP’s innovation partnership with Imperial College.

A statement about the restructuring of WRAP and the departure of Mr Maddox has been requested.
