This is the first major initiative to come out of WRAP's programme to increase wood recycling. Wood is one of the four key material streams targeted by WRAP.
WRAP intends to offer contributory financial support to boost wood reprocessing capacity in the UK and develop new wood recycling technologies. WRAP's objective is to double wood packaging recovery and to achieve 40% recycling and re-use of construction and demolition wood waste a year by the end of 2003/2004.
Tom Fourcade, WRAP’s material sector manager for wood, said: “This initiative will enable significant growth in UK wood recycling capacity. This is a practical demonstration of our support to industry by stimulating increased investment.”
WRAP will direct its funding in two areas – the panel board sector and wood recycling applications. WRAP said that the panel board sector has the potential to utilise greater quantities of waste wood and that its funding will be targeted to accelerate investment and enable growth to occur more rapidly.
And following recent innovation in developing new wood recycling applications, WRAP wants to incentivise the introduction and development of new wood recycling technologies, such as wood/plastic composites.
WRAP hopes that the new capacity will come on stream during 2002/3 and will help local authorities hit their recycling targets by enlarging the domestic end-use market for collected waste wood.
Details of the application process, guidance notes and criteria will be posted on the WRAP website on December 3. The deadline for applications is January 25 2002.
