Wood recyclers receive cash boost for expansion

Lancashire firm Plevin & Sons Ltd has received a 395,000 grant to expand its wood recycling activities.

The company, based in Mossley, Ashton-under-Lyne, recycles about 2,000 tonnes of waste wood a week from civic amenity sites and commercial businesses. It will use the grant from the Waste and Resources Action Programme to install new machinery that will process up to 40 tonnes of wood each hour.

Plevin & Sons currently supplies boardmills with chipped wood, and is intending to use its WRAP grant to improve its material for the chipboard industry as well as diversifying into alternate markets including animal bedding, equestrian riding surfaces and garden mulches.

The money has been provided through WRAP's Regional Market Development Fund. The government-funded organisation has also confirmed a 106,000 grant for West Bromwich Pallets, which was reported by letsrecycle.com in October (click here for story).

Advantage West Midlands
West Bromwich Pallets is undergoing an expansion that will more than double the amount of wood waste it recycles to 100,000 tonnes a year. The additional tonnage is not only through the WRAP grant – the company is undergoing a 5.5 million renovation and expansion, with 1.2 million provided by the regional development agency Advantage West Midlands.

The WRAP money will contribute towards a second production line for West Bromwich Pallets, along with a new 8-acre site, where it will produce several wood fibre products for play and sports surfaces and landscaping.

Mervyn Jones, special projects manager at WRAP said: “We recognise that regional and local delivery of support to recycling businesses is an integral part of market development.

“The challenge is to strengthen the English regional footprint for market development so we're delighted to award the funding to these two companies in these regions. Between them they will recycle 235,000 tonnes of waste wood by 2006,” Mr Jones added.
