Welsh IT and television recycler in 300,000 expansion

A recycling company in South Wales has said it plans to expand its television and computer recycling services further into England.

Tonyrefail-based Wastechnique began running its 300,000 cathode ray tube recycling plant in January of this year.

The machine, provided by Somerset-based CRT Heaven, has the capacity to recycle 30,000 units per month – around 750 tonnes of material.

The new machine means Wastechnique is now handling around 10,000 CRTs each month, and is now looking to increase the number of local authorities from which it takes units collected at civic amenity sites.

Richard Davies, managing director at Wastechnique, told letsrecycle.com: “We currently deal directly with 12 local authorities in South Wales and the South East of England and also take waste from waste management companies that collect the waste themselves.

“But we are looking to expand further and will be looking to the West Midlands next. This will include several densely populated areas so should yield a large amount of feedstock,” he added.

Directive
Mr Davies also said that the company could run a second line at its plant if need be once the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive comes into force in the UK. “When the Directive comes in that is the time when we need to decide whether or not it is worth investing in a second line,” he explained.

Wastechnique uses a dry diamond saw cutting plant, which allows the company to recycle almost 95% of the material from a cathode ray tube.

Investment for the plant came from the Wales Environmental Trust, Welsh Assembly Government, Finance Wales, UK Steel Enterprise and Barclays Bank.

Dr Keith Parry, chief executive officer at the Wales Environment Trust, said: “Wastechnique is a shining example of what innovative thinking can achieve. The team has always been forward-thinking in its approach and this machine demonstrates its commitment to improving the environment by making real inroads into recycling waste in Wales.”
