Welsh brewer commits 150 pubs to recycle-more-glass initiative

Wales’ largest independent brewer, SA Brain & Co Ltd, has joined forces with Valpak’s recycle-more-glass service to recycle glass bottles from more than 150 of its pubs in the South Wales area.

The involvement of Brain’s is another step forward for the compliance scheme’s glass recycling service, which is also collecting from more than 2,000 other pubs, clubs, restaurants, casinos and hotels across the UK.

Glass from pubs in the Cardiff area is being collected by recycle-more-glass’s partner in the area, Severnside Recycling which has traditionally only been involved in paper recycling. Glass bottles at the pubs are placed as mixed material into bins which are emptied by Severnside into a specially branded collection vehicle provided by Trio Hire Direct.

David Knowles, retail marketing manager for Brain & Co, said the brewery was delighted to be working with recycle-more-glass. “We are delighted to be helping to raise awareness of environmental issues through our managed houses and cutting our own waste disposal costs in the process.”

Rosalind Dorning of the recycle-more-glass team said: “In addition to providing glass for recycling into new bottles and jars, recycled glass can be used in aggregates and construction products which removes the need to quarry raw material.”

Glass containers collected under the recycle-more-glass initiative go for recycling either into new bottle making or into aggregates with both routes generating PRNs (packaging waste recovery notes).
