The seven-year contract is worth 3.5 million as it stands and will see Onyx servicing 50,000 properties and 120,000 residents.
The contract between Onyx and the Surrey borough will begin on November 1 2005. Onyx will be working towards recycling targets set by the government as well as the Surrey Joint Municipal Waste Strategy target.
Onyx will be continuing the service offered by previous incumbent, Farnham based Arkeco Environmental Services Ltd. Paper, cans and glass will continue to be collected, while discussions are currently taking place between the council and Onyx with regards to adding collections for plastic and garden waste. Arkeco ran the collection services in Waverley for the last 12 years.
Target
Onyx will be working to reach a target of recycling at least 36% of the council's waste by 2005/06. In 2003/04 Waverley achieved a recycling rate of 18%, missing its 24% government set target.
Councillor Victor Scrivens, Waverley borough council's portfolio holder for the environment, said: “The awarding of this contract to Onyx represents a solid commitment by Waverley borough council to provide an efficient refuse, street cleansing and recycling service that achieves the very best value for money.
“I believe we have secured a contract that will enable us to hit our recycling targets and make a range of changes to the service that will benefit our residents,” he added.
Cyrille Du Peloux, chief executive at Onyx, said: “This is an excellent gain for us. We are looking forward to the challenges and we are confident we can meet them. We will be working closely with Waverley council to provide fully efficient services. Gaining this contract is of strategic importance as it fits well with the infrastructure we are developing in the area.”
