Waste paper industry mourns the loss of John Haskey

Last Friday the Waste Paper Industry said goodbye to one of its own at the funeral of John Haskey, who passed away following a two-year battle with cancer.

Mr Haskey had been in the waste paper business for most of his working life having worked for Birmingham Waste, Carfax, Maybank and Smurfit.

He had been one of the major driving forces behind the development of Casepak before moving on to run Maybank St Albans in 1983. Following a successful period in St Albans, Mr Haskey then moved to open up the Tamworth waste paper operation for Smurfit in 1991.

The business grew dramatically following the closure of the mill at Tamworth and Mr Haskey oversaw the setting up of the Security Shredding business and the relocation of the depot to a purpose built site.

Industry colleagues said: “Every one who knew John had the up most respect for his commitment and drive and the whole industry is poorer for his loss.”

Mr Haskey is survived by his wife Maureen and his children Peter and Jane.
