The contracts which are already underway will see the company handle 42,000 tonnes of recyclable material and 80,000 tonnes of residual waste on behalf of the Scottish council.
Recycling
The recycling contract has initially been set at seven years but with an option to extend it to ten. It covers two areas of work. The first will deal with 18,000 tonnes of segregated kerbside material a year. The second involves the management of 24,000 tonnes of bulky, mixed and segregated wastes each year, including glass, scrap metals, wood, batteries, tyres, and gully waste.

This waste will be processed at Viridor’s existing plants in Scotland as well as at a new 2 million Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at Bargeddie, near Glasgow.
The new plant, which has planning consent, has a 40,000 tonne capacity and should be fully-operational by the end of the year.
Viridor was chosen from a shortlist of five bidders for this contract including Shanks, GP Plantscape, William Tracey and Levenseat.
Residual waste
The contract for the disposal of 80,000 tonnes of residual waste, which will sent to Viridor's Scottish landfill sites, is five years long.
Councillor Gerry Convery, chairman of South Lanarkshire council's community resource committee said: “The council is confident that the contract with Viridor Waste Management will allow it to achieve their objectives in relation to recycling and waste management.

“The contract won’t enhance recycling further but will consolidate our existing excellent performance of almost 38% of municipal waste,” he added.
Viridor’s regional director for Scotland, Colin Paterson, said: “We’re very pleased to be helping South Lanarkshire Council in its drive to manage its recyclates and waste in the most efficient way possible.”
