RCV purchase sees FCS move to waste and recycling
Surrey-based Facilities Contract Solutions (FCS) has taken its first steps into the waste management market, with the purchase of a refuse collection vehicle enabling the company to offer its customers recycling and waste collection, alongside cleaning and property management services.

FCS turned to Gloucestershire-based Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS) to source a vehicle, opting for a Used 15T 2007 DAF LF55.220, with NTM K-Std body and fitted with an NTM Trade bin lift.
FCS provides cleaning and facilities management services to businesses in central London and throughout the M25 corridor from Maidenhead to Maidstone. FCS customers include many managing agents for multi-storey office premises and independent businesses from a wide range of sectors.
Jamey Fitzgibbon, senior grounds engineer, FCS said: “Over the past five years an increasing number customers have asked if we can take care of their waste disposal. Until recently we used to sub-contract the work but such is the demand that it makes sense for us to do it ourselves. Now our customers can call on us for everything – cleaning, grounds maintenance, security, property maintenance, recycling and waste collection.”
RVS supplies New (RediTruck), used and remanufactured refuse vehicles and provides a host of support services including short to medium term hire, contract hire, parts, repairs and maintenance, finance packages and vehicle transportation (low loader service).

O’Donovan showcases Mercedes Benz Econic skip loader
London-based waste and construction firm O’Donovan Waste Disposal has unveiled what it claims is the first of its kind in the UK Mercedes Benz Econic 4×2 skip loader 1830L, featuring enhanced safety features to protect vulnerable road users.

The lorry has a wide field of vision with its deep panoramic windscreen, a fully glazed floor to ceiling ‘bus style’ nearside door and lowered driving position which puts the driver at eye level with both cyclists and pedestrians. The glazed door also provides direct visibility of the nearside blindspot, a particularly vulnerable position for cyclists.
The company displayed the vehicle at last month’s Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety (CLOCS) exhibition at London’s ExCel Centre.
Jacqueline O’Donovan, managing director of O’Donovan Waste Disposal. “As a progressive company known for bold decisions, we are keen to ensure we are making the best choices to help further protect vulnerable road users. We continue to make significant ongoing investments in our fleet and drivers to ensure that we are in the best possible position to do this.”

Sentinel upgrades vehicle radar system
Technology developer Sentinel Systems has adapted its auto-braking radar detection system to utilise new and advanced components that enhances its performance.

The company has been developing its patented Auto-braking Radar System over many years to produce a reversing aid that can prevent collisions with third party vehicle and properties as well as pedestrians and cyclists, whilst protecting the vehicle itself from any damage.
The system is installed at the rear of the vehicle to detect obstructions and their distance from the vehicle whilst it is reversing, and automatically applying the brakes if it becomes too close. Like standard reversing aids, the system also audibly warns the driver of any obstructions within a certain distance from the rear of the vehicle to allow them to take caution when reversing.
To prevent unnecessary and potentially dangerous false alarms, the auto-braking radar detection is only activated when the vehicle is in reverse. This also ensures that the normal operational activity of the vehicle is not restricted. Once any obstructions or hazards are removed from the detection zone, the system will automatically reset itself to allow the vehicle to resume its manoeuvre.
The company has also developed a number of cameras which allow driver’s to see up to 360° around the vehicle, with additional video recording to capture footage of incidents or collisions.
