Used domestic tools collected by Coventry at CA site

Coventry City Council has launched a re-use scheme for domestic tools in partnership with the charity Tools with a Mission.

The city's householders are being urged to make use of the scheme by bringing used tools to a specially built container at the city's London Road civic amenity site.

Ipswich-based Tools with a Mission normally operates through local groups, including churches, at various locations through the UK. They collect the tools which are then sent to Ipswich for shipping to countries such as Africa, Uganda and Romania for use in disaster and famine relief and development work.

Coventry became involved with the scheme following a request from a local resident, Ken Heywood who asked the authority whether it would be willing to install a container at the CA site. Coventry responded by agreeing to pay for the container, now known as “The Shed”.

Councillor John McNicholas, environment cabinet member, said: “Coventry is committed to expanding our recycling and re-use scheme for residents and I'm delighted to welcome Tools with a Mission to our London Road site. In a short space of time we have already collected around 70 tool items including 22 knitting machines, a large box of plumbing and pipe fitting tools.”

Andrew Walster, assistant waste services officer, said: “Already this year we have received 2.5 tonnes of equipment. Much of this has been made of metal and would previously have gone into the recycling skip. Now we are ensuring re-use.”

Mr Walster said that Coventry had redesigned the London Road CA site to encourage recycling so that one side had a range of recycling facilities while the other was for waste disposal.
