Bournemouth University, the University of Southampton and the University of Portsmouth are to use a system provided by Bradford-based pay-by-weight specialists PM Onboard.

Working with Southampton-based collection firm Waste Services (UK), the universities are to use PM's BinWeigh weighing and identification systems, software suites and BinChip 1 radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.
Various waste bins on the university campuses and faculties will be weighed individually on the scheme, with the universities charged directly for the amount of waste generated each week.
Costs
With special software calculating charges, invoices will include a breakdown of costs including a standard service charge, current rate of Landfill Tax and disposal costs. PM Onboard said information on each bin can be provided on a separate report, which will detail the bin number, date and time it was emptied, the weight, waste type and the location.
In the first six months, Waste Services said Bournemouth University and the University of Southampton have saved 12,500 on waste services.
Waste Services business development manager, Simon McNally, said: “Besides the huge savings to the customer there are additional benefits. Future demands through bin profiling can be predicted and planned. Adjusting routes reduces the need for inefficient second half loads and most importantly prevents overloading.”
