The UK's first fully-operational fixed fridge recycling plant, near Newport, will be officially opened on Monday.

German technology will allow the plant to handle 300,000 fridge units a year

The facility, run by SimsMetal UK, will be the first step down the road to solving the UK &#39f;ridge mountain'. Up to 300,000 cooling units will be handled by the plant in a three-shift operation.

Construction of the Newport plant commenced in early March and was completed in April, with a period of testing taking place in June. The facility benefited from regional selective assistance funding from the National Assembly of Wales, and makes use of German technology from MeWa Recycling Machines and
Construction Equipment.

The plant will offer almost 100% recovery of CFC and Pentane gases from the coolant systems of old refridges, and simplified technology means the plant should have comparatively replacement costs for worn parts.

MeWa is also working on plants for European Metal Recycling and P&O; Trans European.
