Turmec wins £5.3m MRF contract in New Zealand

Dunedin city council (DCC) in New Zealand has awarded Turmec and The Environmental Group, a £5.3 million contract to supply sorting machinery to process materials from kerbside collection.

The equipment will form the backbone of a MRF at the Green Island Resource Recovery Park in the city of Dunedin on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, a redevelopment of which is scheduled to begin later this year.

The MRF will feature optical sorters that efficiently separate paper, cardboard, metals, and rigid plastics from the mixed recycling stream. Turmec and The Environmental Group will also deliver all associated infrastructure for power supply and operator safety.

Scaling up for the future

“The DCC has committed to reducing waste to landfill,” said infrastructure services committee chairperson at the council, Jim O’Malley, “We collect about 5,000 tonnes per annum of mixed recycling material from kerbside now. The plant can easily accept 8,000 tonnes per annum. This will allow us to scale up and provide the service to neighbouring regions if the possibility arises in future.”

The Environmental Group CEO, Jason Dixon, said: “Our partnership with Turmec and Dunedin city council highlights how strategic investment in advanced recycling infrastructure is vital to keeping New Zealand clean and resilient in the face of growing environmental challenges.”
