It is almost a year since the industry sought support for the creation of WINTO from the Department of Education and Employment but no official support
has yet been given.
Now Tony Hirons, chief executive of WINTO, has spelt out the dangers that the organisation faces if the waste sector does not stand behind it. But he is optimistic that government support will be forthcoming and has noted that the industry has given its support through organisations such as the Environmental Services Association (ESA) and the Institute of Wastes Management.
WINTO will not be a training provider but will have a strategic role in bringing together employers, government and colleges to define and take forward an agenda for waste training. National standards will be provided for vocational qualifications.
The ESA has spelt out its support for the organisation. Chairman Steve Jenkinson said that it was the industry’s decision to establish WINTO “on a basis of partnership and is an encouraging signal for the future of the UK’s waste and secondary resources management industry”.
