Top waste official in European Commission set to change jobs

A widescale reshuffle of officials within the European Union’s environment directorate could see Ludwig Kramer, head of the waste management unit, move to become the senior legal environmental official.

Such a move would offer the incoming waste chief the opportunity to stamp their own mark on the department where Mr Kramer (pictured) has maintained a firm and respected grip on policy in recent years.

He has been clear on the need for recycling ahead of energy from waste and of the need for Europe to plan for better handling of its waste over the next 20 years.

Sources within the European Commission said confirmation of Mr Kramer’s move could come within the next few days and is part of the widespread restructuring of the European Commission generally.
