Three charged at Alutrade over 2017 fatality

Three bosses at an Oldbury-based recycling company have been charged with gross negligence manslaughter following the death of a worker in 2017, according to a statement from West Midlands Police.

On 24 July 2017, father-of-one Stuart Towns, 34, suffered serious head injuries while working at Alutrade Limited, on Tat Bank Road, Oldbury, and died at the scene.

According to the statement from the police, detectives have now charged Alutrade Limited with corporate manslaughter over the death following an investigation supported by the Health and Safety Executive.

Director Malcolm George, 53, Bromsgrove, director Kevin Pugh, 44, from Sutton Coldfield, and manager Mark Redfern, 59, of Rowley Regis, have all been charged with gross negligence manslaughter, the police say.

They are to appear at Walsall Magistrates Court for an initial hearing on 23 September.

‘Tragedy’

The family of Mr Towns said yesterday (14 July): “It has been almost three years since we sadly lost Stuart and there is not a day that passes that we don’t think of him.

“The past three years have been very painful, and it breaks our hearts he is no longer with us.

“Following the news of the charges that have been made, we remain hopeful that our questions will be answered so we can begin to make sense of this tragedy.

“Stuart was loving, caring, generous, full of life and always had a smile on his face. He was always willing to help anyone that needed it and would never expect anything in return. His huge presence is greatly missed by us all.”

Oldbury

With its main site based in Oldbury, metal recycler Alutrade says it services local and national business and provides total waste management to all types of industries.

The company specialises in the recycling of extrusion and sheet off-cuts from aluminium fabricators and mixed non-ferrous material from merchants, local authorities and waste management companies.

Alutrade said it recycled more than 42,000 tons of material last year and was involved in the recycling of materials from the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games.
