Talks open with Singapore government over radioactive scrap in Scotland

Talks are underway between the UK and the Singapore government officials over what to do with a consignment of radioactive scrap found at the Scottish yard of metal recycler Ireland Alloys.

The material was delivered earlier this month to the company's site in Lanarkshire and was detected in a vehicle by a warning system.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) said today that it was possible that the material, which is contained within scrap aircraft engine parts, came by sea and was offloaded in a container at a local Freightliners site before being transported to the yard.

The container has been isolated and the Agency says there are no signs of physical damage.
An Agency spokesman said that the situation is unlikely to be resolved for several weeks. “Negotiations are very much ongoing and one of the prime moves is to find out from the Singaporean government where it originated and officials there are being very competitive.”
