As part of the European Landfill Directive, adopted by the UK in July 1999, the disposal of tyres to landfill sites will be banned from 2003 and shredded tyres by 2006. In April, the DTI published a paper stating that they would be looking at some form of producer responsibility regulations to pay for the UK's obligation.
The deadline for sending responses to the consultation paper passed in July (see letsrecycle.com story), with packaging firms advising against a complicated system using 'tyre recovery notes' similar to the packaging system.
A government spokesman confirmed that the progress of the tyre consultation is moving ahead in the department, and is “definitely not taking a back seat”.
“The responses to the tyre consultation paper are all now in and being assembled with the aim of making a summary of the responses available within the next fortnight or so,” he told letsrecycle.com.
