Nigel Western of 20, Linley Close, Bridgwater pleaded guilty to dumping kitchen waste in blue refuse sacks, timber, broken furniture and plastics at the end of Little Elm Road, directly opposite the entrance to Wyvern Waste’s Middlezoy Household Recycling Centre.
A search of the bags by an Environment Agency officer, who found them on a routine patrol of the area on February 13, revealed documents in the waste with offenders name and address details.
When questioned by the Agency about the flytipping Western explained that as the tip was closed when he arrived he thought it would be OK to tip nearby as he had seen other waste left there was cleared away. He left the bags just 10 metres from a No Dumping sign.
The offence followed local publicity by the Environment Agency highlighting the problems of flytipping.
Today Bridgwater magistrates fined Nigel Western 350 plus 150 costs for the flytipping offence, which was contrary to Section 33(1)(a) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
“Everyone has a responsibility to ensure their waste is disposed of properly whether they are taking to the disposal site themselves or paying someone else to take it away,” said Brian Payne for the Environment Agency.
“It is always disappointing when someone thinks they can get away with just dumping their rubbish in the countryside.”
