Sims to recycle abandoned vehicles from Gloucestershire

Sims Group has begun recycling abandoned vehicles from Gloucestershire, after it won the contract to provide services to the districts in the county.

The contract, which started this month, has been developed between Sims Group and the individual districts of Gloucestershire. Gloucester city council is set to join the scheme in April 2006, once its outstanding contract comes to an end.

Sims has said that at its height the contract will provide Sims network with approximately 3,000 vehicles to dispose of every year.

The company, one of the two largest metal recycling firms operating in the UK, will be working in partnership with Scrap Vehicle Disposal Services of Cinderford. SCVDS will be providing the collection services for Sims, while a partnership of authorised treatment facilities in Gloucestershire will help in the de-pollution of vehicles.

Sims has said it will be using its three main sites at Bristol, Avonmouth and Cinderford, but in areas where it does not have a site on hand it will be using facilities that are part of its wider network. SCVDS will also be setting up its site as an ATF.

The contract will be managed through the Gloucester Fire and Rescue Service, which has already been working with abandoned vehicles in the area.

Derek Campbell, ELV manager for Sims Group, commented: “We are very proud of the success we are having with our abandoned vehicle schemes in the UK, which fit seamlessly with our growing Authorised Treatment Facility Network.

“We currently operate seven schemes, including one with the Metropolitan Police force, recovering 12,000 abandoned vehicles each year,” he added.
