Savoy Hotel takes a lead in recycling its glass

One of London's most famous hotels – the Savoy – has taken a lead in recycling its waste glass, working with glass recycler Berryman's.

The home of the annual Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, on the Strand, is now helping to save over 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions through the project, which could stir other London hotels to follow suit.

Berryman's South of England manager Brian Head said: “We calculate that during the course of the first year of this service we will collect in the region of 375 tonnes of glass, and this represents CO2 savings of 118 tonnes as all the glass we collect will be used to make more bottles and jars.”

The scheme is being operated with the London borough of Hackney, since the Savoy's local authority, Westminster, was unable to assist.

Glass is taken from the hotel by the council and delivered to Berryman's depot in Dagenham, along with glass from several other commercial establishments in the area.

Approach
Bob Lestrange, commercial waste officer at the council, explained to letsrecycle.com yesterday that the council agreed to provide a service when it was approached by the Savoy.

“The Savoy approached us and we already do pub and club collections in that area so it was not a problem,” he explained.

“Hackney is one of a few councils in London that does its recycling and waste in-house as well as providing a commercial service. So, when it comes to commercial waste if we are approached we will look into offering a service,” he said.

Berryman is now hoping that more of London's top hotels follow the Savoy's lead and begin recycling waste glass.

Mr Head said: “This is a major development in London and a recognition of the value of re-melting the glass rather than using it for road aggregate. Think what might happen if every London hotel adopted the same practice.”
