The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce) initiative is called: “A Forum for Environmental and Sustainable Development Awards” and it hopes the forum will champion best practice and become a benchmarking system.
Simon Fordham, head of the RSA’s environment programme, said: “Our aim is to drive forward the sustainability agenda, to encourage and rewards pioneers and achievers. We want to discuss how awards can encourage businesses and public sector organisations to adopt sustainable policies and practices.”
Peter Jones, director of Biffa, said: “This RSA initiative is fully supported by Biffa and financially supported by Biffaward. The specifics of the forum go back to the need for a more credible electronic information knowledge exchange specifically around the area of the landfill tax credit scheme awards.”
He added: “The range, depth and breadth of the RSA initiative is about a lot more than this however – there is probably 150-200 million of government and corporate funding moving into this area each year. We need to harness the research and development investment to anticipate how best to meet the cost of moving UK plc towards a genuinely more sustainable platform.”
The online database lists more than 200 UK awards and is searchable by award name, subject, sector or geographical region. The forum claims that it will support the evolution of existing award schemes, encourage the development of better-focused awards and help organisers to avoid duplication and identify gaps for potential development.
