The Organising Committee kicked off proceedings with a call for teams from the public, private and voluntary sectors to enter teams in the 3rd annual tournament, which is to take place on Friday, September 9, 2005.
The competition, which last year was won by waste management firm Biffa, will once again see six aside teams of mixed gender competing over a one-day tournament for the coveted Cup.

Held at a first class venue, University College Northampton, with a first class pitch-side bar, the tournament emphasises a friendly atmosphere with a Fair Play theme.
Launching the Waste World Cup 2005, Organising Committee chair and senior lecturer at UCN, Dr Margaret Bates, said: “UCN are delighted to be hosting the 3rd annual Waste World Cup, bringing together all parts of the wastes community to have a laugh, a drink and some exercise. It also gives UCN an opportunity to give something back to the sector which has been so supportive of the waste management work at UCN.”
Last year's tournament saw 21 teams and over 200 footballers from the private, public and voluntary sector taking part. Biffa Waste Services battling through a group stage and knockout stage to ultimately claim the Cup from news provider letsrecycle.com (see letsrecycle.com story).
