REPIC and B2B Compliance join forces on WEEE

Two waste electrical and electronic equipment compliance schemes have announced that they will be working together when producer responsibility finally begins.

REPIC and B2B Compliance will now jointly offer producers the opportunity to sign up with the scheme which will deal with the majority of their waste.

”This move ensures that our members – who may have a minority of products in the business to business sector – can benefit from co-operation between the two parties “
– Philip Morton, REPIC

New regulations under the WEEE Directive will bring different recycling and collection requirements for business WEEE and Consumer WEEE, most producers will predominantly deal with one or the other.

REPIC currently claims to represent over 80% of the consumer products sector – including major domestic appliances, small domestic appliances and consumer electronics. B2B Compliance represents major producers in the business to business sector – including medical devices, monitoring and controlling devices.

Protocol

Under the agreement, producers who produce both business to business and business to consumer waste will only have to sign up with the compliance scheme that will be responsible for the majority of their waste. Under an agreed protocol the other party will handle the compliance for the minority of their products.

Philip Morton, chief executive of REPIC, said: “This consolidates the position of REPIC as the leading compliance scheme for consumer products and, at the same time, ensures that our members – who may have a minority of products in the business to business sector – can benefit from co-operation between the two parties.”

Geoff Young, chief executive of GAMBICA – the trade association which initiated B2B Compliance, added: “I am delighted that industry has supported B2B Compliance as the producer-led solution in the business products sector and this has been recognised by REPIC. We look forward to our co-operative approach yielding benefits from our members.”
