Cartakeback, which was set up by a consortium of independent UK shredders, will make sure there are enough ATFs available to take in Renault and Nissan vehicles from last owners free of charge.
The requirement will mean Renault/Nissan's legal obligations will be carried out as far as European and UK producer responsibility regulations are concerned.
The regulations – stemming from Europe's ELV Directive – mean vehicle manufacturers will be ultimately responsible from 2006 for reaching recycling targets for vehicles they have placed on the market.
Cartakeback's Kathryn Byng confirmed: “We have signed an exclusive deal with Renault/Nissan to provide their network of take-back facilities on a ten-year basis.”
Ms Byng told letsrecycle.com the company is currently readying information for the various motor manufacturers they are working with, so that detailer plans of their networks can be submitted to the DTI next month.
She said that well over half of motor manufacturers that place cars on the UK market have now signed up with network providers to arrange their networks, but that there are still some manufacturers to finalise their plans.
Targets
Under the ELV Regulations 2005, authorised treatment facilities must ensure that 85% of cars are recovered or re-used by weight by January 2006. The target rises to 95% from 2015.
Manufacturers must ensure they have sufficient plans in place so that in the event of metals prices falling so that the recycling of cars is not economically viable, the recycling targets will still be met and a free take-back service offered to last owners.
It is thought about two million vehicles come to the end of their lives each year in the UK. With 189,342 sales in 2004, Renault represents just over 7% of the UK market. Cartakeback is also arranging the treatment networks for Ford, MG Rover and Peugeot Citroen.
