Recresco signs glass recycling contract for Devon

Recresco has secured a three-year contract for the reprocessing of glass collected from homes and recycling banks across Devon.

Glass cullet will be manufactured into new bottles and glass mineral wool

The company said the contract will see almost 18,500 tonnes of glass make its way to Recresco, as part of a joint partnership between Devon county council and Devon’s District authorities.

Glass will be collected from five sites including East Devon district council, Exeter city council, Mid Devon district council, North Devon district council and Teignbridge district council.

The three-year term will range from 1 April 2024 until 31 March 2027, with the option to extend for a further 24 months.

Recresco operates two recycling sites at Ellesmere Port and Cwmbran, South Wales. Recresco has said Devon glass will travel to the Cwmbran site for reprocessing into glass cullet, which will be manufactured into new glass bottles and glass mineral wool.

‘Strong commitment’

Roger Croad, cabinet member for public health, communities and equality at Devon county council, said of the deal: “We look forward to working with Recresco to drive greater volumes of Devon glass into remelt.

“During the tender process, we were impressed by Recresco’s competitive bid, combined with its reputation for innovation and strong commitment to closed loop recycling.

“Devon county council has set ambitious targets to achieve net zero by 2030. Sustainable recycling practices form an important part of this journey and Recresco is an ideal partner for glass.”

Lyndsey Faulkner, business development executive, Recresco added: “We are honoured to have been chosen as the preferred glass off taker for Devon. It’s wonderful to see the team’s commitment to sustainable practices being recognised in multiple regions.

“Recresco’s dedication to environmental responsibility is making a real difference,” Faulkner concluded.
