Recresco receives £250,000 Welsh Government grant

Glass recycling company Recresco has received grant funding of £250,000 from the Welsh Government to help increase its production and create new jobs.

Recresco's Cwmbran facility opened around a decade ago

The funding will be put towards an upgrade in machinery to improve glass sorting and separation at the company’s Cwmbran site. Recresco is to invest in driers and mechanical separation so glass is processed without causing blockages, including on conveyors.

Recresco’s director Tim Gent said: “We are delighted and proud to receive this grant funding from the Welsh Government. The award will contribute toward our ambitious plans for the Cwmbran site whilst helping to secure employment and development opportunities for our staff.

“Recresco is fully committed to a long-term presence in Cwmbran, and we are passionate about working with local businesses and supporting local employment.

“We will use the fund to contribute toward investment in a new state of the art drier and upgrading the front end of our operations by installing market leading mechanical separation plant technology capable of processing a greater volume of material and highest quality end product to our customers.”

The funding is said to be part of a wider programme of investment by the company.

Economic Futures Fund

The £250,000 comes from Welsh Government’s Economic Futures Fund, a package bringing together existing finance schemes into a “consistent approach”.

“Recresco is an important employer in the area”

Economy minister Ken Skates

The Welsh Government’s economy minister Ken Skates said: “It’s great news that Recresco is investing in its future in Cwmbran, and I’m delighted the Welsh Government is supporting the company’s plans.

“Recresco is an important employer in the area and I’m very pleased this investment will see new jobs created, which is a real boost for the area in such difficult economic times.

“The company has worked hard to weather the storm during what has been an incredibly challenging past year and is well placed to meet future challenges and opportunities.”

Recresco

With a site in Cwmbran, South Wales, Recresco is described by the Welsh Government as “the largest glass recycler in Wales”.

Set up by Alan Gent, father of the company’s current director, in Norfolk in 1973, Recresco has headquarters in Nottingham and operates another site in Ellesmere Port.

Its Ellesmere Port facility is its largest, covering approximately 12 acres. Recresco announced in September 2020 it had completed a “multi-million-pound deal” with Peel Ports to purchase the site, which it had occupied on a lease basis for the previous 12 years (see letsrecycle.com story).
