The Liverpool-based company received an International Trade 2004 award in recognition of its consistent growth in exports in the three years up to 2002. During that time, its exports business grew by 23 million, an increase of more than 50%.
Formed over 40 years ago, Norton's has also expanded its UK operations recently, with a 20 million investment in a new administrative headquarters and depot containing state of the art processing equipment. The company has seen a 43% increase in the workforce in Liverpool and Manchester.
Norton's managing director, John Norton, said: “This award is a symbol of what a small company can achieve with imaginative and innovative strategies, and a strong and committed workforce. We have also made a significant investment in our facilities, which enables us to provide high quality products at internationally competitive prices.”
Norton's collects, processes and distributes over 1 million tonnes of ferrous scrap each year, about 11% of the UK total.
The British Metals Recycling Association congratulated Mr Norton and all of his colleagues, and said it was not only a superb achievement by the company, but also a “long overdue recognition of the important role the metals recycling sector plays in generating valuable foreign currency for the UK economy”.
