Weighing equipment manufacturer Avery Weigh-Tronix has provided Malaby Biogas with a weighbridge to monitor the delivery of waste to its Warminster anaerobic digestion plant.

The 15 metre, 50 tonnes Bridgemont pit mounted weighbridge will be used to measure more than 20,000 of waste every year at the Bore Hill Farm site.

Commenting on the technology, Thomas Minter, director at Malaby Biogas, said: The Avery Weigh-Tronix weighbridge will be fundamental in monitoring quantities of waste coming in to the site and weighing digestate as it goes off site, so reliability and performance are key factors to our organisation.

“The anaerobic digestion sites processes use a formula that requires a combination of specific raw materials to be mixed in controlled quantities.Therefore, accurately weighing the bulk waste that goes into the plant is very important to ensure consistency and to provide the required electrical output.

Stonegrave gets Metso shredding technology

Finnish recycling technology firm Metso Recycling is set to supply two waste shredders to Stonegrave Aggregates, for use at its recycling facility at Aycliffe Quarry, Darlington, which will be used to produce RDF.

AnM&J Eta PreShred 4000M-10 will be placed at the front of the existing waste sorting line, to process commercial and industrial waste, where pre-shredded material will then pass through various stages of separation and sorting to recover recyclable materials and remove fines.

The material will then be processed in an M&J Eta FineShred which will produce RDF with an output size of 30mm.

Jens Ole Simonsen, Metso’s product manager for waste and recycling, said: Our M&J Eta pre-shredders are synonymous with leading-edge technology and high quality. By extending this line with the new M&J EtaFineShred 6500, we are now also offering advanced shredding technology for the production of the final product. Our customers benefit from the high performance and easy serviceability the shredders provide.”

Middletons develops RDF plastic strapping technique

Waste baler and recycling equipment firm Middleton Engineering has developed a system for tying baled refuse derived fuel (RDF) using plastic strapping at Biffas Dewsbury recycling facility.

A piece of equipment, fitted to an existing fleet of twin ram balers, enables plastic strapping to be used instead of steel wire as is commonly used. The technology holds the RDF in place while the strapping is fitted, and Middletons claim that it has overcome the tendency for the material to expand when it exits the baler.

The company also claims that the use of plastic strapping could reduce costs for recyclers, as they can avoid the 5 per tonne premium that EfW plants charge for processing bales tied with steel wire.

Middleton Engineerings technical director, Mark Smith, said: Now we know how best to retrofit a plastic strapping system onto any make and model of baler we can help the hundreds of organisations out there who currently use twin ram balers to reduce transportation costs.

Taim Weser to supply IVC technology for Essex MBT

German technology firm Taim Weseris tosupply composting technology for the new Essex mechanical and biological waste treatment facility, to be built in Courtauld Road, Basildon.

The Essex Waste Partnership contracted a consortium of Urbaser Ltd and Balfour Beatty Capital Limited for its 25 years PFI residual waste treatment project in June (see letsrecycle.com story).

Taim Weser has been chosen by the consortium to supply In-Vessel Composting (IVC) system, Rotopala, which consists of a fully automated trapezoidal windrow composting technology with a full odour control system, complying with Defra waste treatment obligations.

The project is scheduled for installation in 2013, process start-up in 2014 and final service commencement in June 2015.

ECO Plastics installs magnetic separation system

Magnetic technology supplier, Eclipse Magnetics, has installed a 300mm Auto Rota Shuttle magnetic separation system to remove metals from plastic waste at ECO Plastics 140,000 tonne capacity plastics recycling facility in Lincolnshire.

The technology will be used to remove metal contained in spring loaded trigger mechanisms that are found in detergent bottles, and can cause damage to equipment if not removed. Batches of the final pellet extrusion will also be rejected due to metal being present.

Eco-Plastics installedtwo Auto Rota Shuttle units which are now responsible for removing 85kg of ferrous materials from the process each week. The fully automated cleaning system discharges ferrous contamination without having to stop the line for cleaning or routine maintenance.
