PRNs allow Swansea to add cans to its kerbside collection

Swansea council has added cans to its kerbside collection with the help of PRN funds from Corus Steel Packaging Recycling.

The council's original kerbside collection used just green bags for glass and paper, but now boxes will be added to collect steel and aluminium cans. The kerbside collection for all four materials will cover 80,000 households by September 2003 and is expected to be rolled out to all 100,000 Swansea households by the end of 2004.

The addition of cans has been made possible by the installation of an overband magnet at the city's MRF to sort the aluminium from the steel. Corus has invested around 4,000 of its PRN revenue into the magnet.

The new scheme is expected to recover 300 tonnes of steel packaging from the waste stream each year. The steel is to go to Corus and the aluminium will be taken to Simms in Newport.

Trish Flint, Swansea council's recycling team leader, said: “At the moment we have exceeded the first target set by the Welsh Assembly and we are ahead of ourselves as we already recycle around 15.5%, more than the 2003-04 target of 15%. Now these new schemes and adding cans to our kerbside collection will help us catch up to the next one.”

  • Corus have appointed a new executive director. Paul Lormor will take over the post from Harold Homer in July 2003 and will be responsible for long products. Mr Lormer is currently chief executive of Caparo Steel Products, a director of Caparo Industries and vice chairman of Metskill, the steel sector training organisation.
