Printer cartridge recycling company receives award

Printer cartridge re-use company Cartridge World has won an award for the growing strength of its brand.

The Harrogate-based company picked up the Daily Express Brand Builder Award at the British Franchise Association's Franchisor of the Year Awards in London's Dorchester Hotel last week.

Cartridge World refills and remanufactures printer cartridges for resale from 230 franchised outlets in the UK. Offering customers the chance to save 60% on their printer cartridge costs by recycling, the company estimates that its turnover will be over 40 million this year and is to open a further 72 new stores by the end of the year.

At the award presentation, Jon Notley of the Daily Express said: “Cartridge World is raising brand awareness on the high street with its highly distinctive brand image. It has used tried and tested marketing initiatives, as well as national advertising campaigns to support its brand.”

The company believes that cartridge recycling has the potential to save 15 million litres of oil a year in the UK. About 47 million printer cartridges are landfilled in the UK each year, where they can take up to 450 years to decompose.

Cartridge World estimates that only 15% of cartridges are recycled and with 70% of homes in the UK expected to own computers by the end of next year, the company expects its market will grow.

Cartridge World’s managing director, Duncan Berry was presented with the award by Sir Bernard Ingham, the British Franchise Association’s president and chair of the awards' judging panel. The judges based their decision on growth of the competitors and how franchisors are building and establishing a good reputation.

Mr Notley said: “Cartridge World has introduced some exciting promotions, which are creating even greater brand awareness, as well as more importantly, greater turnover for its franchisees. A perfect example is its 'Plant a tree not a cartridge' campaign which will help to ensure that consumers are increasingly aware of their responsibility for the environment.”
