The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it is currently responding to a fire within the landfill site on Lower Melville Wood, with six fire appliances and specialist resources mobilised to the scene.
An SFRS spokesperson said: “We are currently in attendance at a fire within a landfill site on Lower Melville Wood in Ladybank, Fife.
“Operations Control have mobilised six fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene.
“Due to smoke in the area, nearby residents are asked to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
“Crews remain in attendance working to make the area safe.”
Fife Council said the fire is contained within a designated storage area but has forced the temporary closure of the site.
A council spokesperson said: “At this stage, the fire is contained within a designated storage area, but it means that the site is closed for the rest of today.
“We expect to be able to reopen tomorrow.”
Police Scotland said surrounding roads remain open but advised members of the public to avoid the area while emergency services remain in attendance.
Fife landfill fire
The latest incident comes after firefighters concluded operations at the Ladybank landfill site on 27 May 2026, ending a major fire that burned for more than two weeks.
At the height of that incident, the SFRS deployed 12 fire appliances and specialist resources, with more than 60 firefighters involved in efforts to contain the blaze.
The fire involved recycled material and waste spread across an area measuring around 200 metres by 300 metres. No casualties were reported.
The cause of the latest fire has not yet been confirmed. Emergency services remain at the scene working to make the area safe.
