The 50,000 sq ft site is split into several buildings, each containing different recycling equipment, including a new cathode ray tube recycling plant which will process around 50 computers and television monitors an hour.

Many UK plants simply take the CRTs in for recycling, but at Computer-Recycling.co.uk – part of Recycling.co.uk – the company has its line set up to test the monitors before putting them through the dismantling process. Monitors that are still in working order will be sent for reuse.
Also on site is a WEEE shredder, which deals with general household electrical items. Capable of processing around 4 tonnes per hour, it breaks items down into small pieces and segregates the metals – copper, aluminium, stainless steel and ferrous metals – through a combination of magnetic and eddy-current separation. Plastic waste is also sent for recycling.

The site was opened by Charles Jackson, Recycling.co.uk's managing director. “We are all very proud of the new WEEE recycling centre,” he said.
“We have worked hard to create what is probably the UK’s most modern and sophisticated facility for processing electrical and electronic waste. It gives us the confidence to say to our customers that whatever form of electrical waste they have, we can handle and recycle it in strict compliance will all current and proposed legislation,” Mr Jackson said.
The company said with the new centre it can offer “a comprehensive recycling facility that meets all current legal requirements and industry standards”.
Mr Jackson said: “We have undergone rigorous assessment by the Environment Agency and are recognised as a fully licensed handler of hazardous waste electronic and electrical equipment. We are registered as an authorised treatment facility, as a waste transfer station and as a licensed waste carrier.”
