Powerday opens 330,000 tonne capacity Enfield MRF

(l-r) Councillor Alan Sitkin, Enfield council’s cabinet member for economic development cuts the ribbon with Mick Crossan, chairman, Powerday

Recycling company Powerday unveiled its new material recovery facility (MRF) on Friday (4 December 2015) in Enfield, London.

The new site, which cost £10 million to develop, has the capacity to recycle and process 330,000 tonnes of construction and commercial waste from the London area. The local family business is creating up to 60 jobs at the plant, which will deliver an environmental and economic boost to the area.

Licensed by the Environment Agency, the facility extracts recycled materials from waste including wood, plastic and rubble before turning the residual fraction into a refuse derived fuel, which will initially be exported to energy-from-waste plants in Europe and then in the UK.

North London Waste Plan

Managing director, Mark Bensted, said: “This new site is a very important development for us. Powerday provides a huge capacity to London which significantly helps towards the mayor’s targets for self-sufficiency”.

The Enfield facility is an example of the sites identified in the North London Waste Plan area which are required to process the amount of waste being produced, increase recycling and find alternative ways of using and treating waste in North London.

A draft version of the strategy was published in August 2015, outlining a planning framework for waste management in the London boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest for the next 15 years (see letsrecycle.com story).

Success

Powerday has stated 2015 its “most successful year yet” in renewable fuels, with the production of over 140,000 tonnes at its Old Oak Sidings materials recycling facility.

The company has said it expects to grow significantly further its renewable fuel production in 2016 through the new site at Enfield.

Speaking at the opening of the facility councillor Alan Sitkin, cabinet member for economic development at Enfield council, said: “The improved recycling facility is a real boost for Enfield’s green economy. We are really putting our money where our mouth is in terms of the Circular Economy and so is Powerday. We are looking forward to many future years of happy cooperation”.
