Police question former Bristol Waste staff over ‘possible fraud’

Two former employees of Bristol Waste have “voluntarily” attended interviews by Avon and Somerset Police in relation to possible fraud within a waste depot.

The allegations against the pair came to light earlier this year (see letsrecycle.com story). Bristol Waste confirmed at the time that it “became aware” of “possible fraudulent activity” in 2020, and passed this on to the Police.

Now, as investigations continue, a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We can confirm there’s an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud at a waste depot in Avonmouth. Two people, a man in his forties and a man in his thirties, have voluntarily attended for interview as part of our ongoing enquiries.

“Bristol Waste continues to assist with our investigation.”

Co-operating

The investigation is into “a small number of individuals” and not Bristol Waste itself.

A Bristol Waste spokesperson added: “Back in 2020 we became aware of possible fraudulent activity within one of our depots. Immediate action was taken, and all evidence was submitted to the police. The case is now under police investigation and we remain ready and willing to co-operate. Following the reports, we implemented a number of new measures to ensure security at the site which have proven to be effective.
