Wood Yew Waste, which is based at Chelson Meadows, is preparing to sign a deal to take 10,000 tonnes of waste wood a year from Devon's CA site contractor, Devon Waste Management.

The agreement will see wood which is deposited in Devon's household waste recycling sites chipped and sent for recycling at the Norbord board mill in Devon or turned into added-value products such as animal bedding.
It follows a 200,000 investment by Wood Yew Waste in a new picking station and loader, which the company says has allowed it to accept more wood including contaminated material, which it could not formerly recycle.
Speaking to letsrecycle.com today, Clem Spencer, managing director of Wood Yew Waste, explained: “We wanted to take more wood from Devon before but we did not have the capacity and we did not have the equipment needed to get the material up to the standard required by the board mills.”
He added: “Now our new GK feeder spreads all the wood out, enabling pickers to sort out the contaminants such as nails, which make up 5% of our intake.”
Growth
Wood Yew Waste's expansion will create six new jobs and boost the company's current recycling capacity of 15,000 tonnes a year.
Mr Spencer, who was made vice-chairman of the Wood Recycler's Association last month, said: “The company has seen tremendous growth from processing 5,000 tonnes of wood a year when we opened in 1999 to an expected 25,000 tonnes or more this year. The new contract will double our recycling business and hopefully take us to another level.”
ABC
Mr Spencer hopes that much of the new intake – which will see the company handling 200 tonnes of wood a week – will be turned into a new added value product known as Absorbent Bio Compound (ABC), which the company is currently launching.
ABC is designed to mop up oil and chemical spillage and Wood Yew Waste claims that it is already attracting interest due to its high quality.
Mr Spencer said: “This is the first product for mopping up spillage which is made out of recycled wood and it is twice as absorbent, half the weight and half the price of clay granules which are the current market leader.”
He added: “Within a year we will be earning as much from added value products as from the board mills – that is our future.”
